Digital artwork for production in Blood
line

These instructions are for manuscripts that have been accepted for publication.

A note about color: If a figure must be published in color, then the author will incur a $600 color fee. If a figure need not be in color, then be sure to supply it in Grayscale mode or you will be charged the $600 fee.

Blood asks authors to supply digital artwork files for print production, using the following steps:

  1. Lay out figures as compactly as is consistent with conveying the relevant data. Figures will be sized to fit the smallest possible space; in order to prevent radical changes in figure content, prepare the figures in one of two sizes: 8.0 cm (1-column width) or, if necessary, 11.5 cm (1.5-column width).

  2. Go to our printer's digital art guidelines and configure your files to meet the standard resolution and color-space requirements for artwork to be commercially printed. High-resolution TIFF and EPS files are the standard for proper print production; although PowerPoint files can be accepted, they will not yield results as good as TIFF and EPS files. Note: We require that all color TIFF and EPS files be in RGB mode; so disregard our printer’s CMYK mode requirement and use RGB instead. Black-and-white figures should still be grayscale rather than CMYK or RGB. Our printer's guidelines are at http://cjs.cadmus.com/da/guidelines.asp.

  3. Go to our printer's art preflighting website and test your prepared digital artwork files using the free software. You will first need to register to download, install, and use Rapid Inspector. Once the software is installed, you may use it to test on it artwork files individually or in batches.

  4. If any artwork file still does not pass the Rapid Inspector test, go to our printer's support page for digital applications, find your digital art software, and follow the instructions for creating an acceptable file.

  5. On your computer, create a folder named with your ms# and the corresponding author’s last name (eg, "2001-01-1234 Smith"). Save all your figures to this folder.

  6. Go to ftp://blood.hematology.org and log in using the information you received in your acceptance letter from Blood. Upload the entire art folder from your computer.

    • If your web browser is Internet Explorer for Windows 5.5 or higher, click on ftp://blood.hematology.org. When the Log On As dialog box opens, type in the username and password given to you by Blood staff. Using Windows Explorer on your computer, find your figures folder, select it, and copy it. Then return to the Internet Explorer and paste (Edit, Paste). (Note: Pasting several large artwork files may take a few minutes.)

    • If your web browser is Netscape Communicator 4.x or lower, you will not be able to move a folder of figure files. Ask your Blood staff contact to create a folder for you; when you receive confirmation that this has been done, click on ftp://ftpuser1@blood.hematology.org/. When the Password dialog box opens, type in the password given to you by Blood staff. Go to the staff-created folder; on the File menu, select Upload File, go to your folder of figures, and upload each file one-by-one. Although these earlier versions of Netscape will upload files to FTP sites, they will only do so one at a time.

    • If your web browser lacks the ability to upload to an FTP site (eg, Netscape Navigator 5 and higher; Internet Explorer for Macintosh; Safari; Opera; Firefox), you must use FTP software. Use the login information given to you by Blood staff and follow your FTP software’s directions for uploading files. (Note: Because no browsers for the Macintosh have FTP capability, Macintosh users will need FTP software; an example of an independent review of FTP software for the Mac is Macworld’s September 2003 review.

  7. Email your Blood staff contact to notify us that you have uploaded your digital art files.
