The Morphology of Glucose 6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficient Erythrocytes: Electron-microscopic Studies

D. DANON 1, CH. SHEBA 1, and B. RAMOT 1

1 Polymer Department, The Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovoth, Israel, and Tel-Hashomer Hospital, Israel.

The conclusion that may be drawn is that though under normal conditions the survival time of enzyme deficient red blood cells is not too far from normal, the ageing of these cells from a morphological point of view occurs at a much faster rate; in other words, one could speak of "progeria" of the enzyme deficient red blood cells.
