Thrombus formation in the carotid artery was initiated by application of FeCl3-saturated filter paper on top of the vessel at 0 minutes and continuously recorded up to 30 minutes with a miniature video camera that was inserted in one eyepiece of the surgical microscope (see "Materials and methods" for details).
