RETRACTION

Controversy has surrounded several recent papers from Dr. Friedhelm Herrmann's laboratories in Berlin and Ulm, Germany. Following the discovery that some of the data in a paper appearing in 1996 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine were fabricated, suspicion over other papers from this group was raised. Subsequently, some, but not all, coauthors on many of the group's papers, including several published in BLOOD, have requested that their names be removed from the work(s). The authors' requests and our own review of the German Joint Commission's report on the matter have led the Editor to conclude that data was indeed falsified. As a result, the BLOOD Journal regrets to inform its readers that the following publications have been retracted:

1. Gruss H-J, Ulrich D, Dower SK, Herrmann F, Brach MA. Activation of Hodgkin cells via the CD30 receptor induces autocrine secretion of interleukin-6 engaging the NF-kappa B transcription factor. Blood 1996;87:2443[Abstract/Free Full Text]

2. Sott C, Dorner B, Karawajew L, Herrmann F, Brach MA. Transforming growth factor-beta relieves stem cell factor-induced proliferation of myelogenous leukemia cells through inhibition of binding of the transcription factor NF-jun. Blood 1994;84:1950[Abstract/Free Full Text]

3. Ahlers A, Engel K, Sott C, Gaestel M, Herrmann F, Brach MA. Interleukin-3 and granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor induce activation of the MAPKAP kinase 2 resulting in in vitro serine phosphorylation of the small heat shock protein (Hsp27). Blood 1994;83:1791[Abstract/Free Full Text]

4. Gruss H-J, Brach MA, Herrmann F. Involvement of nuclear factor-kappa B in induction of the interleukin-6 gene by leukemia inhibitory factor. Blood 1992;80:2563[Abstract/Free Full Text]

5. Brach MA, Bühring H-J, Gruß H-J, Ashman LK, Ludwig W-D, Mertelsmann RH, Herrmann F. Functional expression of c-kit by acute myelogenous leukemia blasts is enhanced by tumor necrosis factor-alpha through posttranscriptional mRNA stabilization by a labile protein. Blood 1992;80:1224[Abstract/Free Full Text]

6. Oster W, Brach MA, Gruss H-J, Mertelsmann R, Herrmann F. Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta ) expression in human blood mononuclear phagocytes is differentially regulated by granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), M-CSF, and IL-3. Blood 1992;79:1260[Abstract/Free Full Text]

7. Brach MA, Herrmann F, Kufe DW. Activation of the AP-1 transcription factor by arabinofuranosylcytosine in myeloid leukemia cells. Blood 1992;79:728[Abstract/Free Full Text]

8. Hermann F, Andreeff M, Gruss H-J, Brach MA, Lübbert M, Mertelsmann R. Interleukin-4 inhibits growth of multiple myelomas by suppressing interleukin-6 expression. Blood 1991;78:2070[Abstract/Free Full Text]
