A model showing the effects of serum anti-RLIP76 antibodies on endothelial cells (JPG, 56.2 KB) - (A) Endothelial cells express membrane surface RLIP76 that catalyzes ATP-dependent transport and extrudes glutathione conjugates from the cell thus exerting a protective role against oxidative stress. (B) By blocking RLIP76, anti-RLIP76 antibodies increase intracellular levels of 4-HNE and GS-HNE and thereby decrease GSH. (C) These events lead to oxidative stress-mediated endothelial cell apoptosis.
